Otzi or Oetzi the Iceman is a largely researched subject since discovery in 1991. Otzi is a 5300 year old mummified body. The name of the iceman is derived from the Otzal Alps where the ice man was hence discovered. Two hikers stumbled on this mummy when they were crossing the Alps near the border of Austria and Italy. The Otzi was based on the head and was also pierced by an arrow (Ghose, 2014). Since then research about the Otzi has focused on what the last meal of the Otzi was, the fashion sense of Otzi, and more. As of 2015 the most recent findings with respect to this iceman was that there are nearly 61 tattoos on the mummified Otzi (Lorenzi, 2015). The newer scans revealed the tattoos once again igniting the debate of whether the inking was a form of medicinal practice that was carried out in the past. This essay reviews the information on the Otzi tattoos and their revelations on alleged medicinal practices of the past.
Otzi is a deceased human mummified male body that was found in the Italian Alps and is currently preserved in the South Tyro Museum of Archeology in Bolzano, Italy. Clinical examination of the iceman reveals multiple tattoo markings on the body. The Iceman also has had much illness during his life and could be suffering arthritis and musculoskeletal injury. Kean et al (2013) researched on the numerous tattoos on the Otzi’s body. These tattoos are linear carbon tattoos and do not appear decorative as is used in current times. They appear to be medicinal tattoos and might have been made on the iceman for medicinal reasons. This research is significant as it reveals how medicinal practices might have worked in that age. A form of acupuncture like rendition of pain is seen to have been done here (Kean et al, 2013). Most current findings of the Otzi as presented in Discovery News indicate that the iceman would likely have died because of brain damage. The iceman furthermore was covered with linear markings as thick as 2 mm and 8 mm apart and was as long as 40 mm in length. The lines form a perpendicular cross; there are lines seen on the right leg, the ankle of the left foot, and other lower section of the legs. The newer imaging techniques available now seem to indicate that the visible tattoos are present on the wrist of the left hand and the back of the lumbar regions. Previously, unidentified tattoos were revealed because of this imaging (Lornezi, 2015).
