The SSP project was started for the slum areas where the toilets are to be built. Most of the people who reside in the slums are addicted to their own lifestyle and they need to be motivated to support the development process. In order to implement the construction of the toilets in these areas, it was considered that there will be an initial assistance through the oversight of the CBO who will be given the responsibility to ensure construction of block toilets. In addition to this, the role of NGO’s and other private bodies was considered important.
In order to manage the same and to ensure proper operation and maintenance activities it was decided that annual money of Rupees 31 will be charged from every family. These charges will help the proper maintenance of these toilets and will also insure that the operations are carried out effectively.
As per the project around 211 toilet blocks were initially constructed with 4000 seats which had benefitted around 200000 of people. In the second phase around 150 blocks were constructed which had benefited to around 150,000 people (Subbaraman et al, 2013).
Another major plan which had been initiated by the government in the year 1971 was the Slum Areas Act. As per the act, it was decided that any area will be declared as a sum if there is any kind of danger in terms of health and safety and the people who are living in the area are deprived of the basic amenities such as food, clothing and shelter and the areas where the buildings will be considered as unfit for the proper habitation due to its narrowness or over crowdedness and the place which has an improper ventilation, cleaning and sanitation facilities will be declared as a slum.
Also, when they are going for the same, in early morning or the night there is a continuous fear of molestation. There are a number of incidents where the women in slums at Mumbai have to bear awkward situations. Creation of the proper sanitation by the government will also minimize the problems of crimes and will help a great deal to control the crime. The creation of the separate toilets for men and women not only safeguards them, but it prevents the crime in the society.
