A carnivore which means a ‘meat eater’, in Latin which mean ‘meat’ or ‘flesh’ is a living organism who takes up its energy and strength from the food or we can say a diet that mainly consists exclusively of the meat of other organisms or if we specify we should say, animal tissue no matter whether it is through predation or it is through scavenging (Estes, 1974). Those animals that are particularly dependent on the flesh of animals for all their strength requirements are called as the obligate carnivore animals whereas the other that can have the food apart from the flesh of animals are considered as the facultative carnivore animals. A carnivore that sits or we can say that occupies the top most space or the place of the almost all the food chains is also known an apex predator or in simple language, we can call them as Large carnivores.

Those plants that catch and just swallow the insects or flies are known as carnivorous plants. So in similar concept, fungi is one of the microorganisms that can catch microscopic small animals that are not visible to us are often called as carnivorous fungi (Estes et. al., 1998).

Characteristics of a Carnivore

Characteristics of the common carnivores include a few organs that they have and that they use them for catching their target (we can specify claws and teeth claws as the basic organs that serve these functions in a large number of vertebrates). In fact, these assumptions might mislead you, as a very few carnivores just do not hunt and are actually scavengers (keeping the fact in mind that though most hunting carnivores might scavenge only when there is an existing opportunity). Thus, they don’t have the specific features that are related with the hunting of carnivores. Also, carnivores animals have a comparatively very small digestive organs and systems when compared to herbivores and omnivorous animals. (Glen et. al., 2007). There are so many other animals that can actually catch other animals by having their eyes evolved facing forward or in front and thus this makes a depth perception really possible. We also cannot deny the fact that this is almost universally accepted among all the mammalian predators. But yes, other predators e.g. crocodiles, they have eyes facing sideways eyes and they catch up by the way of ambush instead of than the way of pursuit.
