In the recent years the unemployment in Australia has been hovering around 6%. It was 6.2% in March 2015 which remained stationary from February 2015. However, when compared across March 2014, it has risen by 0.3percentage points. The unemployment in Australia has shown an overall rising trend over the years. The lowest unemployment rate in Australia was observed in February 2008 at 4% while the highest was observed in December 1992 at about 10%. The average employment from 1978 has been somewhere around 6.91% whereas over the average rate for March 2014 to March 2015 has been around 6.6% with the highest rate being 6.4% in January 2015 while the lowest rate was in March 2014 at 5.9%.
One of the reasons for unemployment in the Australian Economy is the shifting of production industries from Australia to the Third World countries mainly because they offer cheap labor which substantially reduces the cost of production and make the firms price competitive in the global market. The developing countries also have lax environmental standards which is gradually making them “pollution haven” so that firms can produce with relatively unclean technology in these countries.
Another possible reason for growing unemployment is the sluggishness of the global financial sector. Global financial sector’s slow growth has led to shedding of a lot of employees in Australia. Furthermore, unemployment from other sectors has increased the pressure on the internal financial system of Australia.
Increased unemployment leads to decrease in consumption. Less consumption translates into falling demand which in turn affects the production of the commodities. When there is decline in the production, firms and industries tend to shed employees further causing unemployment. When people are unemployed, they live off their savings. Savings which are usually in the form of investment so, people withdraw their investments. This leads to a decline in the investment in the market as well which further restricts growth of the firms thereby forcing them to shed employees creating a feedback loop. Zappone in his article talks about this phenomenon that occurred when there was high unemployment in Australia.
