The term globalization over a period of less than two decades has risen to being used in daily vernacular from just being a relative obscurity. And still amongst academics there is a debate regarding how to define globalization and what exactly is happening in it. The definition of globalization in international relations is very fluid. In order to define the term globalization, it would be very useful if the meaning of the term global is established first. Three definitions of the word global have been used in the recent debates about globalization. Firstly, so as to indicate life beyond the national level, it is used as an interchangeable word with international and world. Secondly, it is used as a word for the purpose of description of the planet and the globe in which we live under an environmental and geographical sense. Thirdly, as a time-spatial concept the involvement of quality in the worldwide stretching of social relations; this is regarded as the definition of global which is used widely to define the term globalization
The term globalization has been defined by many International Relations theorists. Globalization, in international relations is generally accepted to be the procedure of increasingly changes in the global scenario which impacts almost all the parts of the world in various sectors which includes technology, economy, media, environment and politics (Lee 2000). It is also regarded as the rising interconnectivity of individuals across the globe.
It is suggested by Jan Aart Scholte that for the term globalization there are at least five wide usages. He proposes that in some manner they are overlapping and related, but the emphasis they have is completely different. In terms of internationalism, he recommends the most common interpretation of globalization. Global is synonymous with international from this perspective and it is utilized for the description of activities around cross-border amongst nations. The interpretation of globalization as suggested by Scholte is liberalization. It is regarded as a procedure in which government imposed restrictions are removed. These restrictions were on the movements amongst the nations and by creation of a world economy which is borderless and open globalization removes this barrier. Globalization has been equated with universalisation in the third conception by Scholte. Global means worldwide in this usage and it is regarded as a procedure to spread several goods ranging from decolonization to cars and also rendering experiences to individuals all across the globe.
