Locke characterizes the state of nature based on the freedom of each individual. Naturally, the independence of mankind is free from any absolute power or any legislative authority of man, in short liberty of mankind in the society is under no legislation power, except that approved by the consent of commonwealth or due to the trust put in that legislation (Locke, Ch 3). Freedom therefore is not how it is typically defined, which is liberty of every man to do what he wants, as he pleases, without being tied by any laws (Filmer, Robert). Instead, according to Locke, freedom is the ability to live in a society within the parameters of law and standing rules, made by the legislative power, which are common to everyone in the society.
