The undertaken electricity generation unit emits excessive Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen Oxide NOx in comparison to the allowable criteria by the local authority. The allowable Sulphur dioxide SO2 emission is <50mg/Nm3 and allowable Nitrogen Oxide NOx is <200mg/Nm3. However, it is evident that the unit has an emission of SO2 and NOx more than the allowable emission rate from the regulation authority (Han and Lee, 2011). Therefore, the emission of SO2 and NOx should be reduced so that it can be lowered to the permissible rate by the regularity authority. Moreover, the issue is the emission of SO2 and NOx is much more than the allowable rate by the regularity authority and the electricity generation unit has to reduce the emission of SO2 and NOx.

The unit already employs a flue gas desulphurization strategy to achieve SO2 gas emission of 200mg/Nm3, however, it is not adequate for the newer regulation as according to the new regulation the allowable SO2 emission is <50mg/Nm3. Therefore, to reduce the SO2 emission from the unit, the operation process should be modified and must apply some improved techniques so that the emission rate can be reduced to the permissible rate (Hou and Guo, 2014). Besides this, the NOx emission rate is also higher than the permissible rate, thus the emission of NOx must be reduced to the allowable rate. The electricity generation unit also employs a combination of low NOx burner and SCR to reduce the emission of NOx to 500 mg/Nm3. However, it is also much higher than the allowable rate of emission. Therefore, the unit must adopt some alternative process that supports in reducing the emission of NOx from the process of electricity generation by this unit.
