Ageism is a stereotype methodology to discriminate people based on the age. The target audience that is vulnerable to ageism is usually senior citizens. It happens at all environments from healthcare to media portrayals to employment. The stereotyping has led to rejection of healthcare support and avoidance of ill stages of the patient. In the recent times, young people are also vulnerable to the issue of ageism. The problem with it is the dependence on others and lack of contribution to the family as well as society (Bytheway, 1995). While this practice is regarded as illegal by many countries and treaties have passed to eliminate age discrimination, it still prevails as a critical issue.
Ageism is a natural phenomenon and cannot be stopped. It is perhaps feasible to alter the attitudes of people towards the prejudice. The problem is that people who vote against the concept of ageism are also isolated from the society. An example is the recollection of a lost thought. Some people consume time and this is regarded as a senior moment and ageist phrases are then passed. It is a problem with one’s cognitive perception. When derogatory attitudes fill the mindsets of people, ageist prejudice prevails.
Physical appearance is a factor that influences the people to pass comments and spread immoral beliefs. Some look aged but are young. Few others are actually aged but look young. The difference is often misunderstood by the people (Posthuma and Campion, 2009). Media industry is another example where elderly people are discouraged of opportunities or allocated with roles that have limited scope. This has been the tradition in the industry and it is the female artists who are often vulnerable to it.
