Assignment First

Grasp of Content

The second major chapter discussion is focused on the requirement for a theoretical or methodological apparatus in order to study the design history. Many problem aspects in the case of art history are usually designed and questioned with a proper method of inquiry. Now that design history is considered as a more proper branch off, and it also requires a methodological apparatus. Old notions of understanding design, such as viewing it as some form of applied art is untenable in actual practice. In the current age of technology, two forms of design history inquiry hence come to the forefront which are the social history of technology and then the cultural history of technology. Society, products and people are culturally appropriated in order to understand their design sense. Fallan (2010) presents the perceptions of different authors from Hard & Jamison’s ‘Hubris and Hybrids’ to Bijiker’s ‘Of Bicycles, Bakelites, and Bulb’s’ in order to present how authors have strived for an understanding of design history beyond its art history roots. Theories of socio-cultural impact on technology are incorporated here. An attempt has been made, although the treatment of industrial design with respect to social-cultural aspects are not as comprehensive. Fallan (2010) calls these attempts as being refreshing as they in general attempt to consolidate science and technology studies as distinct fields.

In the final chapter, the author analyzes for the epistemology of concepts that were critical for design history understanding. The authors present a more exploratory discussion where many questions and trajectories are raised for the reader and aims less to leave the reader with a proper answer on the knowledge settings.

Critical Perspective

Are everyday things to be considered as building one’s environment? Could the ordinary have such a socially significant impact in the world. Now Fallan (2010)’s is not the only research work that has taken up the understanding of the significance of the small and the mundane in people’s social and cultural constructions. Consider the research work of Norman (2013) who argues how small things and their design aspects would play a major role in consumerist motivations, which in time also shapes social behaviors. Now translations, interpretations and more are presented as the primary reason why people’s ideas are framed in a certain way. Current media studies that are often discussed from the angles of frames and perspectives support this notion. It is true that how a content is framed and presented to an audience well studied would help persuading the audience to accept the content better. Similarly, design history states that people and their ideas over the years are formulated by different lens of interpretations and translations. Thence, the book claims that people entering the studies of history must also understand the frameworks and theoretical perspectives.
