The scheme has been successful in uniting different sectors such as banking, consumer goods manufacturer, oil palm producers, retailers and traders. The below figure shows the share of different members’ in the group.
Unilever is associated with the RSPO as the founding member of the group. The company is one of the largest buyers of Palm Oil in the world. The company has taken various initiatives in being committed to sourcing sustainable palm oil only from sources that are traceable. The company is further transforming the way palm oil is sourced and also effective engagement of suppliers. Overall the steps taken by the company is making RSPO a successful initiative as it is resulting in reduction of deforestation as business and livelihood is provided to palm oil producers and all those who are part of the business chain (Reinhardt, 2005). Such initiatives of Unilever have been appreciated by the organizations such as Greenpeace.
The company got involved in this initiative in the first place as industry led initiative in cooperation with WWF. The initiative taken Unilever was a step towards supporting the sector that was lacking initiative and inability of the local government to properly regulate the sector and priority was given to economic development rather than preservation of forests.
