Sustainable living to an individual means to live in a certain way that reduces the individual’s impact of living on the environment. Materials used are sustainable, long lasting and more importance is given to sustainability rather than aesthetics. Given this background, this research report has been prepared in the capacity of an environmental advocacy group on the sustainability of new housing developments in Southern Australia. Sustainability of housing developments and sub-divisions is the major choice and to a lesser extent sustainability of housing design is also discussed.

Environmental Sustainability
An overview of the environmental sustainability issues with respect to housing developments is required first in order to understand the issues and opportunities. Some of the issues achieving sustainable housing are presented as follows. First, consider how the current plan of the Southern Australian Government is focused on affordable housing. Now the affordable housing as a concept is seen to derive from the use of low cost materials that are cheaper and are much weather resistance. The use of these sustainable materials should hence combine with strategies such as mixed land use in Australian cities to consolidate sustainability. High density rises are created within cities that cater to these requirements, however these are mostly available to upper end of society as the costs of planning and strategizing goes into raising the estimates. For instance, it is to consider the environment and food protection area that has been identified in Southern Australia for instance that seeks to protect the landscape from urban expansions. The purpose of this area is to contain urban expansions and limit them within certain regions only. In this way urban footprint is at least consolidated and contained within certain areas. Any form of expansion that is made outside this area would also be recorded much more transparently. Now in consolidating thus, the prices for housing within that identified zone would alone become higher. Planning similar sustainable development for the lower end of society hence becomes a challenge. The affordable housing policy and sustainable housing are at opposing ends.
