Kusozu is a theme which could be easily seen in Japanese Buddhist paintings. It is one of the most provoking images in Japanese artwork. In this painting there are nine stages of degeneration of female body. This painting was found during late thirteenth and early fourteenth century. Since then till 19th century the same painting could be found in different forms like hand scrolls, hanging scrolls, and published records. The theme of the painting is taken from a historic Buddhist doctrine (Chin, 1998). In early 15th century, people believed and were taught that if they have to get free from physical needs and affection, then they have to meditate on the impurity of a decaying body.

The painting is a collection of ten descriptions. The first one is the pre death representation. In this the female body is shown in noble attire, she has long black hair, a nice figure with red lips. By looking at the painting, it is clearly visible that the lady in the picture appreciates her attractiveness and the prosperity. In the second description, the lady is shown as recently dead as she was shown resting on elevated mat and decorated with attractive accessories. She was shown there without clothes. The remaining seven descriptions depict astonishingly blunt and horrific picture of the body’s decay. Since there are no proper background, the body seems to be more blunt and remote (Chin, 1998). The painter didn’t hesitate at all, and he threatens the spectators violently with the pictures of the body decay. In fact it will not be wrong to say that, the kind of accuracy and exactness in the picture depicts that the painter had actually witnessed a decaying body.
