Literature Review

In this literature review, there will be collation of the different research that was undertaken in order to gain comprehension of the exiting research related to teaching children a new subject. Some of the important factors are elucidated in the following.


The purpose of this research is to understand the learning issues that were felt by the international young children who are between the ages of seven to ten. From this the teaching plan and future action plan would be developed. Analysis has been done for the children who are from a background where their first language is not English. They are made to learn a new subject such as mathematics by using English. The following insights are the existing research that is done which is related to this research requirement (Kay and Kletskin, 2012).

Learning English as a second language is a complex process. It requires predictable and sequential stages. The progression of the learning is found to be similar to the stages children undertake when they learn their mother tongue. The language acquisition process of a child is detailed in the following section.

Language Acquisition Process

In the initial period of learning the second language, the ESL (English as Second Language) might experience a silent or lull period. In this system, the children focus on the comprehension and respond to the other non-verbal means of communication. Increased prolonged exposure to English language causes the children to learn several additional stages of language acquisition process. Once this is completed, the ESL students will try to communicate using one- or two-word responses and they would use repetitive phrases that are short.

After the completion of this stage, the students began to use simple sentence and engage in dialogue between the people. In a tenure of one or two years, the ESL students start to use simple sentence and can engage in longer conversations. At a final stage of the language acquisition, the ESL students would learn and start to comprehend about the grade- level classroom activities. They would be able to argue a particular viewpoint and start to express themselves. With advanced training and practice, the students can be able to read grade-level textbooks and gain the skill of writing fluent essays.
