The utilization of plastic bags requires attention in the debate of sustainable consumption. This is very important when it is understood that packaging is a major element of the daily life. It requires considerable amount of different resources and generates huge amount of waste by the lifestyle of the consumers. There have been many campaigns, which are running throughout the world by environmentalist, Governments, and retailers to find new ways for reducing use of plastic.
Plastic is the worst invention of man. As the consumption rate increase in recent years, consumers require more and more shopping bags to contain their stuffs. In each year, Vancouver consumers use tones of plastic shopping bags in supermarkets and threw them into garbage. However, we all know that plastic is toxic, non-biodegradable, and a dangerous chemical material which is not eco friendly (Zheng, Yanful, & Bassi, 2005). Plastic bags often reach the drainage system and cause clogging. The plastic waste has caused a big environmental sustainability issue.
To help to resolve the issue of plastic shopping bag, I want to come up with something that can build a connection between people and reusable bags. In terms of helping people to solve the difficulties of using reusable shopping bags and make the reusable shopping bags being used efficiently. I propose to design a system to make the reusable shopping bags actually being used. I would like to propose a complete, organized, and cohesive reusable shopping bag renting system to people. This system will allow people to rent shopping bags in supermarket. They don’t have to purchase one, and they don’t need to remember to bring one. This system aims to help consumer, and to change their habits through a persuasive and completed system (Adelman, 2010).

The rent system starts from incorporating with the local supermarkets to have a shopping bag renting systems. When the user gets into the market, there will be a recognizable area for the system An automatic rent shelf will be put in the entrance of the market, so when consumers go to the market, they can rent or return the bags here. The rent fee is very low, it won’t crease economic burden to consumers. And the fabric bags are durable, when people reuse them; its cost is lower than plastic shopping bags (Adelman, 2010). After people rent bags and after use them, they can return it or extend the renting dates in next shopping. People participate and use the rent system through the App. The Figure.2 describes how the App works. Each consumer can rent maximum six durable fabric bags; in case of they forgot to bring the shopping bags back. All they need to do is just sign in into the app to have an account, and using the app to scan it to be recorded. This renting system aims to remind people to bring their shopping bag every time. When people are renting a thing, they need to continue to pay for it (Buying is one time consuming, which is more forgettable) (Adelman, 2010). The use of reusable shopping bags can be convenient for carrying and storing items.
Through incorporating with the local supermarkets, this system requires a unified color and shape of the shopping bags, apps appearance, renting place, and recycling place, so to make a visual impact to audience. To unify them in one color aim to hierarchy them in one organized system to force audience to remember it, and use it (Changing habits.)
I believe this renting system can change people’s shopping habits a lot. Nowadays most of people have the environmental awareness, but they won’t spend too much time on figuring how to do to solve the issue (Sutton, & Turner, 2012). This system will help them to build new habits to consume. Thus we can decrease the plastic disposal wasting and decrease the fabric shopping bags resuming rates. So we can build a better Vancouver.
