In the past, only formal organizational structures were considered for their impact on organization. The informal states were not considered as part of the working structures. However, the effect of informal structures are also considered, so it could be said informal conditions and ways of working have become one of the reasons for structural changes of organizations. Formal structures in working are the rules of how an organization would work. This includes elements such as the organizational procedures, work place protocols, organizational charts and more. These are elements of the structure that are set out as hard and fast rules and have stayed over the years with fewer changes. However, as research studies state over time, it was established that there are changes that either do not get assimilated very well within the dominant organizational structure of working but make sense to be used in every day interactions (Pettigrew, 2014). These every day interactions are the elements of the informal structuring. Informal structures unlike the organizational structures are not formed as hard and fast rules.

They are not in writing. However, these are developed over time as employees within the organization would have found them easier to use. For instance, in the context of a merger, two different sets of employees are brought together. They could vary in culture, in nationality, in language based on their years with the company etc. The employees would definitely be facilitated by the formation of formal structures to help them, and there would be organizational structure changes that are initiated in order to assist the merger. However, it is also an established truth that formal structures could only solve so many issues. The people involved in the merger would find new ways of doing things for interaction and establishing intergroup dynamics. These forms of informal structures would hence become a part of their daily routing and in some situations people forget the formal structures as applicable in such context. At times, the informal structure might even end up conflicting with the formal structure. Organizations in the context of this conflict might become less efficient when it comes to meeting the objectives. This hence becomes a cause for changing the existing organization structure.
