In Australia, the fire danger indices are brought into use as per the McArthur Forest Fire Danger Index (FFDI). This index is mostly used in Australia to predict the cases of fire in grassland areas as well as forest fire scenarios (GFDI and FFDI). The use of this index is done by the fire safety and control authorities in Australia. The two other highly practiced fire weather indices are the Forest Fire Weather Index of Canada (FWI) and the US National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS). A research study that was conducted recently in the Radiata Pine Plantations in Australia by Cruz and Plucinski (2007) suggested that the FWI fire indices system used in Canada and UK is capable of providing clearer indications of extreme fire cases in comparison with the Australian McArthur system.
