1.Markets are not perfect in real world situations. Explain what competition policy of government is about?
Markets are not perfect in the real world situation. This statement is very true as for a perfect competition market the below sated factors are needed:
i)All firms should sell an identical product.
ii)All firms should be price takers.
iii)Each firm had a relatively small market share.
iv)Buyers are aware of the nature of the product sold and the prices that each company charges from the customers.
v)Freedom of entry and exit is given to each firm in the industry.
All the five factors are rarely present in the market together. Thus this results in rare existence of perfect markets in the real world. As almost all the products differentiate with each other in some degree in terms of size, brands, ingredients etc. Agricultural products are identical but they also differ in quality with little of zero differentiation. Oligopoly is a situation in which there is zero product differentiation and industry is consolidated with few large firms (Armendáriz, 2010). Entry and exit is difficult for firms due high start up costs and strict government regulations etc. Due to increase in information age consumer awareness has increased about the availability and prices of the products. Although real world situations do not support perfect markets but agriculture industry nearest as it there are many small producers with no ability to alter selling prices of the products (Makowski, 2001). The buyers in this industry are well informed and entry as producer in this market is not difficult.
The National Competition Policy of Australia was a landmark in microeconomic reformation program. The main principle of the policy was that the competitive markets will best serve the interests of consumers and the community.
