In such a context, it is necessary to bring autism into a social model of understanding as Blume presents it. With autistic individuals becoming a large minority group in the world, it is indeed necessary to address the situation in a social context, more than the medical context. Estimated statistics show that the prevalence of autistic people in the United States alone would be roughly equal to the number of Jews in the world, so it is quite natural to understand them as being one of the dominant minorities in the country. Blume’s argument is that the world is increasingly becoming autistic because of the effects on life by networked computers. Now this cannot be understood as an absolute statement however. The media has the power to popularize some notions and kill others. Media and the social connect with mass media has empowered people. Society can connect with one another on a massive level. In the context of global issues society is unified. The connections with one another can improve solutions. People get a chance to discuss about things. They get perspective. Newer research and previously interconnected knowledge concepts are now connected. Knowledge gaps are filled. This would lend itself to more solutions and understanding of how and why things work the way they do. This would not have happened except for media expositions and discourses on the internet. Now because of existing media discourses, too much interconnectivity, and a disdain for the interne could lead people to think autism is one form of disruptive neurodiversity. However, its connections in the medical world suggests otherwise.
Medical researchers claim autism is part of society for a long time now. It probably was called by different names such as childhood schizoid personality, or children lacking social skills etc. What is called autism now probably had many labels earlier. Society came to a better understanding of autism and the related conditions later. In fact, the very DNA of a person suggests that autism is rooted in some mutations of very old genes that are probably present in some families (Silberman, 2015). Although not present in the worldwide population, it could be present in some genealogies and hence would affect some people. It can be considered as something that is passed down over the years. It happened because of evolution and researchers argue that it was not just created because of the internet or the social communication networks one tends to abuse in current times. Some social psychologists and researchers however insist on presenting autism as a form of contemporary aberration. They want to argue that autism is caused by some of the current trends, such as watching much television, binging on fast food snacks, staying connection on the internet etc. For these advocates of neurodiversity, autism must be a gift rather than as an error. They want society to accept it as happening because of genetic dispositions and because of current forms of living. Therefore, it is like a trend that has happened whether people support it or now. Hence, appropriate forms of accommodating it in society are a basic requirement here.
