Without doing this, we are in no position to know to what extent changes may be specific to particular states or part of a wider trend of welfare state evolution. Furthermore, it is difficult to draw conclusions about the durability of such change, since what we observe may be the relatively temporary result of one government’s policies, later to be reversed, rather than a fundamental shift of direction. However, a comprehensive review of welfare state evolution across the developed world is beyond the scope of this article.
Two things, however, seem clear. First, despite the need to reject crude or deterministic
versions of the globalisation thesis, advanced capitalist economies are facing common challenges arising from the increasing (and ideologically driven) integration of the world market (Sykes et al., 2001; Esping-Andersen,1996; Mishra, 1999).
