This new culture brought motivation amongst people in Korea and encouraged them to take part in Film-making and related work, though the first feature which was produced in Korea is still an unknown and dubious fact.
Dramas in Korea as basically intended for telecast on television and employ the format of mini-series, i.e. a series of episodes, where a story is told in a planned and sequenced structure. The Korean drams are in Korean language and have become popular overtime throughout asia. Korean dramas have given rise to the Korean wave and have contributed to its propagation as well as its perpetuation. The two primary genres of Korean Dramas include– Soap Operas and Geuk (Korean historical dramas). The genre of Soap operas focus on local popular themes in Korea such as issues and problems in married and love relationships, family problems like the ones involving differences between in laws, stories related to love and friendship amongst youngsters etc., however this genre like most the other Asian genres of drama is somewhat orthodox and does display or focus on frank sexual content (N Eberstad, 2006).
The Geuk genre is all about the important events of Korean history and politics. All dramas in this genre focus on showcasing these themes in a fictional manner. Geuk is also popularly known for its special costume design, creation of special effects and action sequences and specialized visually appealing sets. Both Geuk and Soap Operas genres of Korean drama are characterized with very fine production quality, well written and organized scripts, apposite characters which in most of the cases are the personification of a real life character or characters from a significant part of the history or recent past (N Onishi, 2005).
