The floating signifier refers to the division of a culture, concepts, and systems. Physical differences in between humans have been leading to separations upon races, and these segregations establish a social system where race is considered to be significant. Racism throughout the history have been plaguing the perception and viewpoint of people, mainly in context of the color of other persons’ body, hair, and skin. Differences in between races are not a biological concept, this is clearly evident from the failed scientific research, conducted to prove the biological connection among different races (Storey, 2012). I completely believe that the people now a days adopt a new approach while perceiving race, and thus eventually refer it to a social historical culture in place of biological concept.
Race is not long lasting as argued by Hall that although skin color is not constant, but is a signifier that refers to a specific culture. Thus, race is a signifier that shifts or floats in meaning, mainly because of social differences.
