Counterparty Risk: This is the risk that the party with whom the contract had been entered into; did not honor its obligations. This type of risk is widely present in the forwards markets. The markets for futures and options are regulated by the authorities and the payments are guaranteed by the clearing house, which minimize the risks in these markets. This risk has a direct relation to the credit risk (which is the risk of decline in the credit rating of the asset due to decline in the creditworthiness of the party which deals in it).
