As a person entering the hospitality industry I believe these are attitudes that I should be able to apply in the workplace. However, I do also understand the realistic expectation of the industry would be different. Only some organizations would be open to the idea of a person taking charge as an intrepreneur. An intrepreneur with a more independent state of thinking can also be a liability for organizational working (as well as an asset). Hence, only some companies would be willing to take up this chance. However, I also believe that the industry understands they can achieve innovation better with intrepreneurs than with employees who just do this bidding.
Stephen Lund (in Tedx Talks) managed to make his exercise more creative. He achieves this by means of pedaling across countries and this shows how creativity and innovation is possible in simpler things. It is this form of an ability to put a creative spin on normal things that is required in an organization. Stephen Lund is seen to be bicycling (as a form of exercise). However how he bicycles and how he achieves his exercise needs in a more efficient and creative manner is the difference. Where a normal bicycling person would take up a bicycle path that he knows Stephen Lund ended up cycling across the country. The creative way of exercising is shown to add more enthusiasm for the person (Lund, 2015). If the creative need to exercise was considered as a form of creative idea (like an analogy) in an organization, then innovating to meet the creative idea would require the support of the organization. Innovation and creativity in essence are both different. Creative thinking or creativity is an idea. The implementation of the creative thinking is innovation. Innovation is the process by which workplace resources, people and other support are lent to the implementation of the idea.
Innovation in an organization is something that happens along the way. I believe that creative thinking need not be a product of focused thinking and sometimes it could just as well be an idea pursued in parallel to something else. Nathan Kuehne in the Tedx Victoria talks discusses how he was working on finding a new way to diagnose cancer. The high school student in pursuing this was able to find a new way of testing for Phenulketonuria that will have positive implications for PKU patients (Kuehne, 2015). This ‘Tedx talks’ helped me realize that ideas usually exist in normal work environments also but it is the person and their attitude that helps them innovates. I believe that in the hospitality industry it would be necessary for the employees to be encouraged in their workplace such that when they have creative ideas they should have the freedom to seek the help of the management. This will help them to be innovative in the workplace.
An important point to consider when discussing intrepreneurial working and innovation is that the needs of the guests in the industry should in no way be affected. Innovation is essential for the organization and sometimes the organization would have to roll out test services with employees in order to adjudge their innovation. However, I believe the impact of such testing needs to be monitored strictly. I believe the hospitality industry is a very competitive industry and any employee entering it must understand the significance of innovation.
