The Shard which is also called as the Shard of glass is a skyscraper that was built in Southwark London. It is now part of the London bridge tower and the London Bridge Quarter development. With a height of around 309.6 meters, the Shard is at present the tallest construction in the United Kingdom and in the context of Europe it is considered as 4th tallest building. The initial purpose of the building was envisioned by the developer. The joint owner of the building was to create a vertical city. The vertical city would include in its setting, retail offices and hotel style accommodations. There were home apartments to be considered here, as well as public viewing galleries. It was a busy transport hub location. Hence the place was supposed to be developed in a way that would make use of the population that moved through the city at that point. A church spire like structure that would look to the observer, like a shared of glass projecting from Thames was the original design.

In terms of socio-environmental elements many things went into consideration when the Shard was planned for. Recreational trespassers from the Oxford community in climbing the Shard write about how the Shard actually appears to be more of an engineered exclusion. In 2002, even as the planning stages were going on, Shard came under scrutiny because of Heritage associations.
In current times, Shard is fast becoming a symbol of the United Kingdom, as Greenpeace volunteers showed in 2013. Around 6 Greenpeace volunteers who were rooting for environmental protection wanted to climb the building. They were activists working against the Arctic oil drilling that was happening because of Royal Dutch Shell. They climbed the building and unfurled a flag. In terms of environmental issues as directly associated with the construction of the Shard, steps are being taken up in order to ensure the area surrounding the Shard is supported.
Recreational trespassers from the Oxford community in climbing the Shard did seem to argue that the Shard was more of an engineered exclusion. However from the beginning of its planning, Shard was envisioned as something that would appear to be connecting with the surroundings and the location. Its glazing’s and more are reflective of such a design.
