First such game was held in 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton. Teams have been formed quickly in the East Coast universities and soon contests were being held among neighboring universities. Henry Chadwick is considered as the first sports reporter in America. In 1862, Chadwick was hired by the New York Herald to cover baseball and he also played an important role in promoting baseball (Steven, 1995). However, it was only in 1883 that the first sports department had been created by Joseph Pulitzer at major newspaper when the ‘New York World’ was bought by him. The result was that the circulation of the newspaper increased from 15,000 in 1883 to 60,000 in 1884. Similarly it increased to 150,000 x 18 85 and similarly in 1887, the circulation was 250,000.
