There is no doubt that Intel’s initial success generated a lot of profits which were only a result of company’s constant struggle for excellence. It made huge investments in the industry and gave its customers a superior product that in no lacked in quality. In view of its financial success, the company was able to give its customers rebate payments. Rebate payments are a great means of rewarding loyal customers on making a certain amount of purchase. They provide a means of reduction in overall cost of the product which eventually leaves the customer at benefit. While such payments are completely legal and are a great incentive for buyers, Intel slightly modified its rebate payment strategy.  Millions of dollars in payments made to computer companies would have been completely justified if it would have been on rewarding them for being loyal Intel customers. However, the move was motivated by Intel’s attempt to gain exclusiveness in the industry. The criteria on which these rebate payments were made included barring the purchase of AMD microprocessor chips which is in direct contradiction with promoting health competition. As mentioned in earlier text, these payments were discontinued after Dell decided to incorporate the AMD technology in some of its products. As a consequence, the rebate payments cannot be considered as ethical when they border on being anti-competitive conduct.  The computer companies were not allowed to venture into deals with other product sellers as part of these rebate payments which negates the concept of competition. Intel’s technical superiority can be considered to be its main advantage over other competitors when it comes to free market economy. The demand for microprocessors was primarily dependent on their overall performance. While, it is understandable that a company strives to better the quality of its products which results in an increase in demand, it is not within appropriate limits to take measures that degrade the performance of other products. Intel used the widespread use of its products as a means to affect the efficiency of AMD microprocessors giving customers the false impression that the chips did not perform well. This step was taken by Intel so that customers preferred the company for its better quality chips instead of actually improving their overall performance. These measures are aimed at sabotaging the other competitor. It should be noted that AMD did not actually adopt any such measures. In fact, ADM launched an entirely new product called the Athlon chips which won much appreciation from customers. The chips were actually better in performance than those manufactured by Intel and no software code was used to decrease the performance of the other. AMD won fair and square in this regard which was not done by Intel. Intel did not choose to develop a better product but relied on decreasing the performance of its competitor. This also served as a means of giving a false impression to customers who bought AMD-fitted computer systems. Also, since the software code was incorporated stealthily without any public announcement, it makes one doubt the intentions. Any ethical step does not require discretion. Though, Intel can be applauded for its technical ability that enabled it to develop a software code and may be regarded as an innovative move to further increase its demand among customers.
